Testimonials from the 'GeoGebra-Proficiency' course
As a faculty we are completing this course. I have found this learning experience very valuable and I feel confident now that I can incorporate GeoGebra into my lessons to assist my students in developing a better understanding of the concepts that are often hard to visualise. Knowing there are resources out there to use or create my own fills me with confidence moving forward. Thanks Richard for making this course very user friendly, achievable and confidence boosting. Karen Paulsen, Muswellbrook High School, Jan 2022
Next year will be my final year of teaching. What is fantastic is that through this course I am inspired to work out ways for students to interact with concepts using GeoGebra and in fact any other appropriate method. I am REALLY looking forward to next year and honestly, this course and the ideas and strategies presented have been transformational. So ... you can teach an old dog new tricks! Thank you, Richard. Rod Krause, Dubbo Christian School, Dec 2021
This course is brilliant and it gave me pretty much everything I was hoping to gain. I really liked the idea of replicating the files as it made me see how easy little things were to implement. The strategies explained in the course, honestly, are so in line with my own thinking of how the whole education process should be. GeoGebra is definitely a software which can instantaneously show a student's understanding (or lack of) of the concept being working on. In other words, it fills the gap between theory and practice. With GeoGebra, students get to show what they've learned and if they can apply their knowledge. Simply a great course, excellent pace, friendly approach by the facilitators. I am very grateful. Ile Ilijevski, Northfleet School For Girls, UK, August 2020
The best aspect of the course is the easy self-paced way that one is able to navigate through a lot of theory and create some very useful teaching tools. GeoGebra initially seems to be a geometry creating tool, then through this course, it suddenly takes on a life of its own to become an almost limitless program that seems to be able to create and teach almost anything in the realms of what is Mathematics. I am sure it could go further than even this!! While I am heading towards the end of teaching career, I will of course fall back on these files or create new ones when necessary to help the visual and creative learners. Learn Implement Share has always provided quality based learning programs for teachers and they are the number one stop for teaching development. David Steel, Masada College, Dec 2021
The best aspect of this course was great support from Richard, the easy to follow videos that guided through step by step, ideas about how to utilise this program and thinking of new modern ways of teaching mathematics. Kimberley Reichel, Quirindi High School, Jan 2021
The main things I have realised as I have moved through this GeoGebra course are:
GeoGebra is not just for graphing.
GeoGebra is not just for senior mathematics
GeoGebra is not just for the best mathematics students
GeoGebra is not just for use as a teacher demonstration tool.
Geogebra can be (and should be) used for most Mathematics topics, in all age groups and ability levels, and for student-centered activities. My suggestion to maths teachers is: spend the time, early in the year, with your classes learning the Geogebra basics; it will pay dividends and save time throughout the year. Paul Mirrington, Kinross Wolaroi School, Jan 2021
I have done the engagement course and then decided to do this one as a follow-up. I thought I knew "enough" about GeoGebra to be useful, but how very wrong I was. I have learned heaps and still know there is way more to learn. However, I think the majority of that will be more about how to teach maths conceptually (using GeoGebra) rather than how to use GeoGebra. Seeing some of the other people's files has really opened my eyes to the range of ways GeoGebra can be used. Jon Blencowe, Denison College, Dec 2020
The best aspect of the course was leaning to create graphic tools and introduce students to the use and knowledge of GeoGebra as a learning tool. I was inspired, the course has created a positive change for me. I found the course on the internet. I am on my way to GeoGebra ambassador-hood. Elliot Hayman, Finigan School of Distance Education, Oct 2020
This has been a great course. In some cases this has been used as demonstration only in class, in other cases It has been used for student discovery. The student response has been very positive and the benefits in student engagement and understanding have been obvious. It is nice after 20 years of teaching to find some new inspiration.Patrick Sinclair, Scots All Saints College, October 2020
I really liked the format of this GeoGebra online course. As an American, I have taken other online courses before and did not really get any feedback from the instructor other than a grade for a paper I had to write. The video tutorials were very helpful in learning the program. I liked that the learning was scaffolded. We started out just by doodling, then went to replicating files off a video, then construct files, and finally we created files on our own. It was well structured and I felt like there was support if I needed it throughout the course. I was inspired by the course to try to make my class more student centered and can't wait to start using Geogebra at the start of the school year. Lori Babel, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Emmaus High School, Pennsylvania, USA, June 2018
Hi Richard, I can say now that GeoGebra is much more than just graphing and geometry, even though I used GeoGebra before for showing theories graphically, but I didn't think I could make it as an investigating lesson with a worksheet. Now I see it differently and am grateful that you have shown us how to do that. Geogebra has enhanced the learning of my students and it has given them a better perspective to some of the hard concepts in Maths and they got more involved and engaged in the lesson. This was a great course - I saw GeoGebra in a different perspective and gained more confidence in using it and creating lessons of my own to use in the classroom and share with other teachers. Thank you Richard for all the great Knowledge that you have given me. Etedal Naim Bankstown Senior college, Feb 2020
I am presently teaching at an American and IB curriculum based school in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Prior to joining this course, I used GeoGebra purely as a demonstration tool mostly for graphing functions. This course has given me the skills to use GeoGebra as an effective demonstration, exploration and investigation tool across the varied topics in mathematics. The course is well paced and positively engaging. The activities are given in "bite" sizes with sufficient time to assimilate the knowledge and practice the demonstrated skill, thereby equipping you to produce your unique set of purposeful GeoGebra activities. This has been an exciting learning adventure and kudos to the course instructors for their quick response constructive feedback and effective classroom practices. Roshan - Abu Dhabi UAE
The best aspects were the videos, which explain clearly the steps, as well as all of the resources I have accumulated during this time. I was definitely inspired. I took this course as part of a professional goal I have set for myself to better understand and implement technology in the classroom. I can say that I definitely use Geogebra more now in my teaching, and I also feel more confident using it, I still find GeoGebra most useful for teaching functions and geometry, however, I will now use it when teaching statistics too. Laura Kleyn, The ISF Academy, Hong Kong, January 2020
Honestly, this GeoGebra online course was one of the few PD courses that provided me with skills, ideas and inspiration. The videos were very efficient in explaining GeoGebra, the Maths topics provided featured good variety with activities including illustration, partly completed and student-centred files. I feel as though the time and effort spent to fulfill the requirements and implementations was worthwhile and provided me with solid skills and knowledge that will make my lessons more insightful and engaging. Saad Ahmed, Blaxland High School, Feb 2020
Richard, this course more than met my expectations. It has changed my lesson planning towards the better. I've always wanted to become proficient in using GeoGebra in the classroom as I regard it as an indispensable tool in facilitating deep conceptual understanding and this course has equipped me with an arsenal of techniques with which to build great files towards the learning enhancement of my students. Your course has turned creating files for me into a pleasurable challenge and I am now seeking for more and more techniques to add to what you've already given me in order to create more interesting and engaging files for my students. I've become an inspired and life long user and learner of GeoGebra. Besides the wonderful techniques with which teachers are exposed to in this course it has opened my eyes to how to use GeoGebra beyond the demonstration stage. I now feel confident to implement GeoGebra files as student centered activities whereby students discover the mathematics for themselves through constructing and manipulating GeoGebra files while using a carefully prepared worksheet as a guide. Emmanuel Ginis, Bankstown Senior college, Feb 2020
As someone who has avoided "professional development" for many years, I started the course with a feeling of dread. While it has been time-consuming and I certainly felt a lot of pressure at times to get things done, I feel that doing the course has been very worthwhile. The best aspect of the course was the instructional videos that we started with. These allowed me to quickly feel that GeoGebra would be a worthwhile use of my time. Also, seeing what other teachers have created has been positive. The course has definitely inspired me to incorporate GeoGebra into my teaching. Thank you, Richard, for putting this course together and for all your prompt replies to posted comments/files. A well run course. Mike Smith, St Gregory's College Campbelltown, April 2009
This GeoGebra online course is a must for all Mathematics teachers. I always wanted to use more of technology in the classroom to encourage students to make positive use of technology. I am glad I did this course as I have learnt heaps which will certainly help me to deliver more technology-rich engaged lessons. The course modules are time-consuming though and one needs to understand the program clearly to be highly skilled in it. However, most aspects are mind blowing and the aha moments have been fun. Thank you for creating such a useful course for Mathematics teachers. Francis Fernandes, Evans High School, October 2019
The most important aspect of the course were the file creations. It gives a hands-on aspect while accomplishing something that can be used in my classes. It has opened my mind to stop being the control freak and allow students to explore and play with mathematics, while learning at the same time. I want to continue using GeoGebra in class and inspire students to think about the mathematics they learn and not just repeat processes. Matthew Hayes, Narooma High School, Feb 2019
(TEAM-based) As Head Teacher Mathematics, I decided to enrol in this course along with four other members of the Mathematics faculty. It gave the group time to work as a team, feed off one another, assist and encourage one another throughout the course. By working together as a team it not only brought the faculty closer but fostered teamwork, sharing knowledge and skills within the group and with other members of the faculty. Before commencing I was unsure of what to expect. The course has provided a correct mixture of demonstration and implementation, giving me the opportunity to put what I have learnt into practice. The teachers who didn't do the course this time around are looking forward to completing the course next year. Ray Stoneley, Lithgow HIgh School, 3.12.18
(TEAM-based) I am so inspired by this course that I did a PD with Maths staff and told them to do it. They really loved it and some are thinking of doing it next year. I am definitely on my way to Geogebra Ambassador-hood. I create a file or two for all classes I teach every week on the current topics. Mohammed Safiq, Westfields Sports High School, December 2018
I am relieved I chose to enhance my ICT skills throughout Mathematics, due to a technological advanced world. The more ICT I can integrate in a lesson, the more engaged students of this generation are. GeoGebra is tricky to get your head around, but I would like to thank you Richard (and others!), for answering questions, and providing me with those helpful tutorials. I'm definitely promoting this course with faculty members. Nathan Marks, St. Edwards College, October 2019
A testimonial from a teacher who 'struggles with technology' I have been on a roller coaster for all the course- at times exhilarated but often challenged to the maximum. I have loved learning how to use Geogebra and am very excited to improve the understanding and enjoyment of Mathematics of the students in my classes. I am amazed at how much I have gained from the course. The best aspects of the course were actually recreating files through the use of video although I also found this challenging at times. By the Circle Geometry section, I was actually feeling like I was able to work more independently. I did also really like the Data investigation and the use of spreadsheets with Geogebra. I used to find drawing these graphs/ diagram difficult so now I will be able to recreate these with confidence. I really appreciated being able to get prompt advice from Richard when I needed it. In particular the offer to talk on the phone when I was stressing! I first thought about doing this course 7 years ago. I am glad I did not do it then as I am certain my computer skills would have caused me issues. I did find the course very long, probably because I am slow at learning on the computer. When I look back on this now, using GeoGebra in the classroom as I developed files has been very beneficial. It has been a wonderful experience. Thank you, Richard, for developing this course and providing me with new skills to be able to engage and excite the minds of my students. Deb Simmons, St Gregory's College Campbelltown, March 2019
I had some basic Geogebra skills before, but am excited to have gained so many more. Having completed this, I can now see opportunities for use in the classroom that I just would not have seen before. I LOVE the dynamic text. Investigation style activities are still a work in progress as we need to teach the students to work this way, and that takes time, but I am excited to keep trying :) Alison Owler, Narrabeen Sports High School 24.10.18
I have thoroughly enjoyed this GeoGebra online course. It was very well organised and I have appreciated the flexibility Richard showed in allowing me to have extra time to complete it. I enjoyed recreating files and then using my newly learnt skills to explore and create my own files. The added pedagogical theory encouraged me to work towards creating GeoGebra based lessons that would promote conceptual learning and critical thinking. I look forward to enrolling into another one of Learn Implement Share's GeoGebra courses at some stage. Andrea Cheers, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Emmanuel Anglican College Ballina, July 2018
This course has opened my eyes to something that I wanted to learn and could use with my students. I have learnt that Geogebra can be used in many different ways. Some aspects needed going over a few times before I managed to achieve the goals. I look at my year 8 class that did the parallel lines and sees that they are enthusiastic to do more. They have even come in this morning wanting to use Geogebra again. This inspires me to incorporate it in other areas of Maths. I feel positive about the future and my use of Geogebra. The course interested me and challenged my imagination. Veronika Bell, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Lithgow HIgh School, Oct 2018
I enjoyed doing this course and the range of activities it offered to us. I'm particularly inspired by the opportunities GeoGebra can provide for students' conceptual learning. Like most of the participants, I am looking into making more student-centred inquiry-based activities to help promote my students' critical thinking skills. Zohreh Dianati, Yew Wah International Ed School, China, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Feb 2018
(TEAM course) A really great course to actually learn how to use GeoGebra and effectively use it in the classroom. When our Maths staff started to look at our PDP's for this year a few of us wanted to improve our skills in GeoGebra. The best aspect of the course were the videos that you could pause to follow the step by step instructions. I felt supported by these videos and I could learn at my own pace. It was also good that there were three of us doing the same course as we were able to support and give each other ideas of how we were using GeoGebra in the classroom. I am inspired to use GeoGebra in more creative and engaging ways. Melinda Cocking, Merewether High School, ‘GeoGebra-proficiency’ course, May 2016
I've really enjoyed this GeoGebra online course and found it very beneficial. The practicality of it was great - from very early on you I was creating and using my own files. The bit of theory helped with ideas and structure when developing files. Having the course as a self-paced course is very helpful. Since I decided I wanted to teach maths I had a desire to impart conceptual understanding to students and Geogebra is a great resource to be able to do this. The course has given me lots of ideas (some my own, plenty from others!!) on how best to teach concepts. Daniel Walker, Newcastle High School, March 2017
Check out the slideshow below of one of the impressive files Daniel made!
I have been inspired by the course and can now see numerous ways to use Geogebra within my classroom. The best aspect of the course was that it was self-paced and the videos could be revisited and ideas were shared. Also, a bonus that we leave the course with numerous completed files that can be implemented straight away. Jenny Lancaster, Canberra Girls Grammar School, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Nov 2016
This course had me rethink my teaching strategies and consider how to better engage the students - especially the more advanced ones. I really did like the assessment task presented on video and saw the value of the experimentation that took place by the students. While some information presented was new and challenging for me, other information was affirming and encouraging to maintain those practices. Tracy Pearson, St Mary MacKillop Catholic College Isabella Campus, Conceptual Coordinate Geometry, May 2016
Learning GeoGbera has been soooo useful and exciting for me to use in class! I am not strong on technology, so this has given me an enormous amount of confidence and to make me think more deeply about explaining theorems and rules in geometry to both capture the students' attention and visually prove that I'm not making it up! This course is definitely in the top 3 of most useful courses I have ever undertaken as a teacher over my 23-year career!! Mark Battese, Maitland High School, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Dec 2016
This old dog has learned some new tricks! I particularly loved the way the course is put together and being able to work at my own pace. My confidence grew from module to module and I now have the ability and confidence to take my skills into the classroom, open up a new file and create something to assist their learning. I am extremely thankful for Richard's input and support during my learning and for the terrific course he has developed. Peter Molloy, Taylors College, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Aug 2016
Richard, I have participated in your GeoGebra online courses and wish to say that these courses have enhanced my skills to use GeoGebra with confidence in my classes especially to teach students in bottom classes. They usually find hard and boring to use the formulae. Using the techniques I have gained from your courses, I found that the students were more engaged and they do understand better. I also now use GeoGebra to graph the derivatives, In Data - Histograms, dot plots using the latest version of the GeoGebra software. I recommend your courses to all new Maths staff members. Thanks a lot. Rita Alphonsus, Denison College of Secondary Education, Conceptual Coordinate Geometry, Sept 2014
I have really enjoyed taking the time to explore GeoGebra. It took me several weeks to feel confident and the little baby steps at the beginning paved the way for achieving more sophisticated objects later. I don't think such growth and confidence could have been achieved in a one day course. I feel my learning is permanent. I have done an online course before with Richard (The flipped maths classroom) and enjoy learning like this. Richard, you do a great job building a little community - I felt included and supported and that you were genuinely interested. Thank you. Ann Hayes, St Augustine's College, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Nov 2016
I found the course engaging and liked what I saw and the reasoning behind everything. I absolutely loved the way the course flowed. The videos are excellent and easy to follow. Every activity left me feeling that I wanted to investigate more. I now also read the textbook a little bit differently as many of them refer to Geogebra files. Thanks! Leon Peterson, Redfield College, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Aug 2016
This GeoGebra online course has given me the confidence to use Geogebra to the level that I find I’m thinking about Geogebra all the time always asking “how can I show this in Geogebra”. The course has given me a confident understanding of what can be done and how to develop resources for my classes. What I like most about Geogebra is that the effect is instant, especially when graphing functions and their properties. By understanding the fundamentals of a topic students are better prepared for problem-solving tasks ahead. I thank you Richard for developing and delivering this self-paced course. Paul Fante, St Marys Senior High, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Aug 2016
I have enjoyed this course a lot. I have been inspired by this course to run more student investigations in my classes and to try and foster students curiosity about why things happen. Lauren Couttes-Smith, Five Islands Secondary College, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, May 2016
A really great course to actually learn how to use GeoGebra and effectively use it in the classroom. When our Maths staff started to look at our PDP's for this year a few of us wanted to improve our skills in GeoGebra. The best aspect of the course were the videos that you could pause to follow the step by step instructions. I felt supported by these videos and I could learn at my own pace. Oh my gosh ... I never realised what a great tool GeoGebra is. I have done online courses before that have seemed to be a waste of my time and onerous. In this course not only have I developed many of my own resources within the allocated time frames. This course has shown me another way to develop student understanding and engagement through discovery - for years 7 to 12. The range of GeoGebra skills and functionally that was covered in the course has provided me with comprehensive toolkit to implement an unlimited range of applications. GeoGebra has extended my higher ability students in enabling them to transition from knowledge to understanding of mathematical concepts via a visual representation of application. Thanks Richard! Nikki Wallis, Jindabyne Central School, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, May 2016
I found this GeoGebra online course really useful as it sparked quite a few ideas outside of coordinate geometry as well. The longer course time gave me the chance to think about what I had seen over a period of time and apply it in small bits and pieces. Some really good resources as well. Sandra Sievers, Condobolin High School, Conceptual Coordinate Geometry, Feb 2015
I had no idea how much I would learn or how useful the files would be in my teaching. I found the course to be both absorbing and challenging and I can definitely say I will be implementing Geogebra in all aspects of my teaching. I found the format of the course to be especially beneficial to me as I could work through the different aspects on my own at my own pace. I liked that I could look back at the videos and files to reinforce the concepts. My students too have benefitted from my use of Geogebra in my lessons, with many seeing how things work immediately. Tracy Scollay, Merewether High School, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, May 2016
This was the first time I had really used GeoGebra for anything more than simple graphing of lines. I am amazed at how many ways it can be used and how many files I can now make! I am inspired! I now have yet another tool that can help me dramatically reach students! Catherine Mills, Penrith Anglican College, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, May 2016
This course has been exceptional. The videos are easy to utilise and the construct files are also very user friendly. It has been a good journey, even though I had to repeat the course due to time constraints, and I would recommend it to other teachers. I am now more confident in using Geogebra to explore different issues in class than I ever was, and am inspired to try out different applications to suit the content I am teaching, and not just follow instructions. It's been fun!! Thanks for all your help Richard! Catherine Cooke, Shoalhaven High School, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, March 2016
This GeoGebra online course has opened my eyes to understanding a different approach to teaching Maths. I have always felt the need to break away from formula driven teaching and find alternative methods for creating understanding, and this course definitely touches on some very effective strategies. Naomi Aigner, Conceptual Coordinate Geometry, Feb 2016
I have gone from spending hours trolling the web for pre-made files to being able to whip up a demonstration file for my junior students. I have implemented its use in my yr 10 , 8 and 7 classes with demonstration files on angles in parallel lines and properties of geometrical figures. My gifted and talented year 7 class used a file I made to discover the properties of geometrical figures. I am able to demonstrate the definition of pi with lower level students with accuracy - no more compasses and strings ! My next aim is to build files to assist with understanding for students in year 11 mathematics and Extension 1class next year. With the gifted and talented class I would like to implement more investigative files with them and have them develop files to demonstrate their understanding of topics and concepts. I feel much more confident in building files and can see how to construct files to demonstrate concepts. I feel I could replicate a file I saw now and adapt it to be my own and better suit my class. Renee Dawson, Toormina High School, ‘GeoGebra-Proficiency’ course, Aug 2016
