I totally agree! I have noticed the lessons I have had the most success were the lessons that I stepped back and let the students take control of their learning. Although I must admit I am guilty of as you have mentioned previously of just trying to get through the content. Especially with the current climate getting through the content is becoming increasingly difficult as we slip further behind. I guess I need to keep reminding myself that the students can only work at their pace not at mine and if they don't understand I need to take a step back and look at why. Richard Brilliant! |

It has been difficult to implement with the current COVID lockdown in Sydney however I remember in the first month of teaching I had to make a phone call to a parent. Luckily one of my colleagues was in the staffroom when I made that call because as soon as I was off the phone he said to me do you know how many times you said umm and ahhh in that call. (I had no idea). Although it was a bit discouraging I certainly fixed it quickly. Now recording video lessons online I watch the videos back and sometimes re-record because of the Umms and Ahhhs the creep in. When I am back in the classroom I intend to start audio recording some of my lessons, to continue improving. Richard The sooner we discover information like this the better! |

I discovered that I need to know what I speak like. Whether I speak monotonously, whether my pace, sentence lengths and pitch are suitable and interesting. To do this I think recording myself regularly and being observed regularly will be very helpful.
There were quite a few areas that surprised me. One of them is that walking around while talking can illustrate my confidence.
Being an early-career teacher, I have been practicing delivering my content clearly and concisely. I have not really focused on my voice. One thing that I have been practicing is using silence and waiting for students to calm down. My students and I have become accustomed to this procedure.
I have recorded myself a couple of times inside the classroom and twice outside the classroom, and I did feel quite strange. I noticed a lot of things I was doing wrong.

This is awesome, Lina. As long as you don't get judgemental on yourself. You are where you re at and the point is to improve. I'm still doing this at my stage in my career ... although I wish someone had suggested this to me in my early career years!
