Hello from Kasturi Murugavel
Hi, I'm in my 5th year of teaching now, and I'm ready for some new insights into the best way to teach equations. Richard Kasturi, This is by far the most effective way to get students started solving equations - or to revise for students who did not go well last time!! Enjoy! Hello from James Ding
I started teaching last year. So far I've (re)taught equations to Year 9 5.1 and Year 11 Standard. Here to learn a new approach/perspective on teaching equations so I can make sure my Year 7s have a strong foundation in algebra. Richard Hey James, great to see you on board! Hello from Georgie Green
I've been teaching for 25+ years and I now have a great part-time role where I go into other people's classes to support the strugglers. I've been able to take up golf due to my reduced working hours, which I'm loving. Richard Hi Georgie - were you at Stella Maris? Anyhoo, welcome aboard. Again. Hello from Helen Mahony
I've been teaching on and off for 15 years. I find most students can solve simple two set equations just by looking at them and logically working it out. However, they can't make the jump to solving more complex equations because they don't understand the process and refuse to write anything down. Richard Yes, and that's the point of the Need-Levels-Choice approach Helen. Enjoy! Hello from Doha Adra
I’ve been teaching math for 15 years. I have covered all stages, but not all courses. The extension math frightens me 😣 Equations are very popular in math classes. It’s all about balance..the way life should be! Quirky fact: I own 4 cats and 6 birds. I need to balance this by adopting another 2 stray! Richard But ... do the cats want to eat the birds? Or are the birds eagles haha? I'm a converted cat lover myself Doha! Welcome aboard Doha, enjoy! |
Hello from Taqdees Pathan
Hi, I'm teaching grade 9 n 10 from 15+ years. Have taught the lower grades as well. With respect to equations I feel, comprehension of the statements is v much required and then only they can be converted into mathematical forms. Richard Welcome aboard Taqdees. I hope you gain a lot from this mini course. Hello from Kerryn Warburton
I enjoy teaching equations to Middle school students and have been teaching for 25+ years. Am always looking for new ideas to invigorate and improve student learning. Richard Hi Kerryn, we meet again. You're going to love this one ... I think!! Enjoy! Hello from Anna Playford
Hi, I've been teaching for around 5 years. I really enjoy teaching equations but I definitely change up how I do it (at least a little) every year hoping to a) convince more students to show their working and b) find new ways to get the strugglers to understand what's going on Fun fact: my chocolate labradoodle Poppy is sitting doing this course with me, not sure what she is making of it Richard Probably secretly begging for your method (do deliver food) Welcome, Anna. This is a great approach. Hello from Trudy Sawyer
I have been teaching all levels of Maths for 15 years. I find that 'top end' students race through solving equations by rote learning rather than understanding how they work and the 'lower ability' students just get lost in the process and want to guess and check. I find students who have little understanding also exhibit poorly presented work. I am hoping to get some tips from this course which will help all the above. Richard Hey Trudy, just saw this come through. I'd say your analysis is spot on! There are two aspects to this PD. 1) The strategy - which is a gamechanger and in my experience, chalk and cheese compared to presenting equations traditionally. And 2) - although I say 'use whatever method you like' I do include some demonstrations of presenting equations in a way that make sense, partly by removing the abstractness. I think you'll relate to both aspects. (think = hope) Cheers |
