This is a clear way of giving the students the instant feedback to students which promotes students to improve and enhances learning. ( instant punishment is more effective than one given later on concepts.) It also gives the teacher to plan the next lessons and to adapt to the level of student learning. I have used some form of this in my classroom and have noticed more engagement as students have been asking questions. I have scaled back my lessons as we tend to forget the "learning pace" of students. I have also tried last 5 minutes towards the end of the lessons by putting some questions on the board and asking and enabling the less capable students to come on board to answer the question. This way I could see and and plan my lessons. During lessons I have also moved around the classroom giving feedback on their progress and encouraging students. ( handing out teacher awards) Also in the lower level classes I have scaled back my lessons and teaching between concepts have sometimes breathing exercises (breath in - breath out) This has reduced the stress and students are more focused. I have asked the students sometimes to write down what are the main concepts they have learnt in the lesson. Richard Some great insights there, Indar. Thanks for sharing. Michelle Millar
I'm trying to improve my ongoing assessment of students so this unit has given me some direction. I want to make it worthwhile for the individuals and me. Richard Michelle, if they ain't thinking they ain't doing maths (!!!) |

Formative assessments are great and are really crucial when teaching a unit of work. One area that really helps me with formative assessment is Education Perfect. I often set the students different tasks to see how their progress is going each week. Richard That is great to hear, Angus. Deepa Jathan
I liked the idea of teacher checkoffs to get students to share what they know. I have done some informal checkoffs but not a planned one in activities and units of work. The informal ones have helped me to adapt my teaching but more planning should help me to get a better picture of student progress and improve learning. Richard Very well said Deepa. Yes, teacher checkoffs are brilliant. And yes, 'asking prompting questions and or showing diagrams that enable students to arrive at the answer' is the way to go. Gaby Conroy
I love the ideas in formative assessment and having a much better idea of how each student is doing and their level of understanding, also the idea that they have a much better understanding of how they are doing. Richard Well said, Gaby |
