Testimonials from the
'Flipped Units' courses
I believe that I discovered the course through an email and thought that it looked right up my alley. I have been dabbling with recording teaching and examples since the DER laptops were given to Stage 5 students and the pandemic got me thinking about doing it again. This course inspired me to keep going with my flipped learning teaching and it was helpful to see how others have flipped their learning as well as seeing ways to improve, edit and compress videos before presenting them to students. It was also useful to be able to work at my own pace to complete the modules and enjoyed the content provided. Glenn Pardy, Uralla Central School, 2021
This course I believe it is the way to go if you want to teach your students online. It includes every possible case for online teaching. At the beginning, it was a bit confusing about which platform or recording program to choose from. However, It helps us see each way's ups and downs and then come to a decision to start from. The other teachers' feedback was also valuable throughout the course. At the end of the day, our purpose is to teach our students the best way possible. The flipped classroom has lots of benefits for students to see the work in advance or learn at their own pace. We alI live in unprecedented times and therefore online teaching should be in place when needed. I also really appreciate Richard's feedback and guidance throughout the course for myself and all participants. He was always there whenever you need him. Sadullah Eser, Australian Islamic College of Sydney, 2021
This course was very helpful to me as we went into lockdown and suddenly had to change from ftf to online, master zoom, master some of the finer points of google classroom and provide a seamless (haha) transition for students. I must say I felt like I was doing everything on the run and was most appreciative of having a course I could turn back to and check if there was a better way to do it. I particularly liked the video re having students putting everything into a single table in google classroom. I really did like the system of having everything together, comments, homework, problems etc. I especially liked the fact that all the student's questions could be put into a file for the following year to access! I have a lot more confidence with videos, making, editing, compressing and uploading and this has been very helpful. I've spent a lot of time using what I've learnt and applying it and this has been very helpful. I feel I've had a chance to master a few little things before having to do more. Susan Griffiths, Xavier Catholic College Skennars Head, Jan 2021
I completed the 'Flipped Mathematics Classroom' back in 2015 and I can say that it was a game changer not only for my students, but for my career. This course enabled me to provide students with the support they need to reach their full potential in mathematics education. I was able to share my expertise with colleagues which in turn helped develop my capacity to develop those around me. I encourage anybody considering adapting to a flipped model to participate in Richard's courses, which are self paced, well supported and resource-rich. Jeff Mills, HT Mathematics, Macksville High School, , March 2020
This is the best online Maths PD course I have done in terms of its immediate and practical application in the classroom. Frances Manning, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Oct 2014
Richard went out of his way to help me with some finer aspects to my unit. The Yr 12 music unit I developed has allowed me to differentiate my instruction and run multiple units concurrently. Michelle Loevendie, Nagle College, ‘Create collaborative online units’, March 2016
This course has been fantastic in that it has inspired and rejuvenated my teaching style. The fact that we actually had to create videos and a flipped unit was initially a challenge for me personally and forced me out of my comfort zone. However, the videos and support on the course were excellent with Richard always being there to answer questions and provide advice. The end result is having this great unit of work to use and all the skills to create lots more. Sally Guise The Riverina Anglican College, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, March 2015
I found this course extremely inspiring and encouraging. It pushed my boundaries and equipped me with the tools to provide engaging resources that would cater for students of varying learning styles and study patterns. A worthy course for new, and not so new, teachers! Kylie Walters, Dubbo School of Distance Education, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Feb 2014
I liked the fact that everything in this course was broken down into really easy steps, and also that we were shown many different options so we could pick which one would work best for us. Also that fact that their was always the option to email and get a quick response if an issue arose. I am inspired by this course to create more videos and to keep using this learning forum, especially start incorporating it into my younger years to get them to embrace self-paced learning. Cassandra McLennan, Henry Kendall High School, ‘Create collaborative online units’, April 2016
The best aspects of this course included being guided through the process, being provided with the many and varied options for delivering a flipped lesson and exploring the technologies. I appreciated the warnings of what to avoid and pitfalls to be aware of. The course has been immensely encouraging, I intend to continue developing lessons in this format and further exploring platforms for delivery. I have been immensely encouraged by the positive feedback of the students who trialled the lessons. The online delivery has made this so much easier to learn and implement. Thanks very much for this thoroughly enjoyable learning experience! Iris Bramley, Willoughby Girls High School, July 2018
I really valued the course. I know that the setup time for flipping a unit is large, but it is definitely worth it in the end. The various examples provided in the course were excellent as one of the hardest parts for me was working out what to actually include in the videos and what types of videos were best. It was also excellent for deciding what software as the information provided was clear and allowed me to make an informed decision. Matthew Ellis, Loreto Normanhurst, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, April 2018
Possibly the most engaging PD I have done. The highlight of the course is that there is no irony in its delivery as the course is a Flipped Classroom. I was interested in the concept before doing the course, however, throughout the course I became inspired and I have since effectively invested significant time in to designing new units for my classrooms. John Hepworth, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Dec 2015
Richard's valuable insights and advice are well researched and allow for a rich conversation on the current status of Learning and Teaching in the Australian Mathematics Classroom. Fantastic Professional Learning. Carolyn Hamilton, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Oct 2014
This course inspired me to implement alternative, collaborative, online learning experiences for my students. It enabled me to learn how to get more out of Google Classroom and has inspired me for the future. A very valuable tool was creating screencast videos. Julia Emilie Kostalas Henry Kendall High School, ‘Create collaborative online units’, April 2016
THIS is how online courses should be run. Having detailed, timely, individualised feedback from the course convenor at each step of the course was what gave this course value. The philosophy of 'just having a go' was a strong message and gave me the confidence to try things I might otherwise have put off. Rob Alexander, The King's School, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, March 2014
This course offered me with a broader view to flipped classroom learning and teaching. I learned from other other teachers from their points of view on education and what Richard had to say. I would recommend this course to any teacher who is willing to utilise what technology has to offer in education and to any teacher who wants to have a new take in learning and teaching. Chi Nang Hyunh, Queenwood School for Girls, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Sept 2014
The practical nature of the course was excellent. The number of helpful hints and thinking through the concepts necessary to get a unit right the first time gave me a lot of confidence. Despite being an overwhelmingly large task, the task of creating videos and flipped units was easier than I thought it would be due to doing the course. Richard, thanks for the work you have put into the course and the way you have structured it. I leave feeling that I know both the theory and practise and have been taught all the tricks along the way that will help in future situations. David Ellis, Wagga Wagga Christian College, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Feb 2016
This course was so beneficial - it was one of the best professional development courses I have completed as it really made me utilise the new things that I have learnt. I was hoping to learn about creating and sharing my own videos and I have been able to successfully do that. One of the best aspects of the course is that it is self-paced and I can keep going back over the content when I need it. It was also lovely to have positive feedback and to see what others were working on. Thank you Richard! Ilsa Gay, St George Girls High School, ‘Create collaborative online units’, Oct 2016
The course was excellent. It was structured in such a way that it was easy to follow the layout. Richard was very supportive and always available for additional feedback. The posts and replies also made the course a bit more like a face to face course. Diane Guillemain, Mill Park Secondary College Victoria, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, March 2014
I really enjoyed the course. It was very informative, well-structured and the wealth of well-researched articles, tips and advice helps me to cut through the even-so-much-more information out there. Thank you Richard for always being supportive, encouraging and helpful.
I also greatly appreciate the flexibility available in terms of the course completion date and that takes into account some of the unexpected things that life throws at you. Thank you again for everything Richard. You are a champion! Juswan Ichwan, William Carey Christian School, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Feb 2018
I loved this course. It was definitely a natural progression from the unit 'Engaging and Motivating Students'. These two courses together have drastically changed the way that I teach. The 'Create Collaborative Online Units' course has made learning a deeper and richer experience for my students and both assessment data and anecdotal data proves that online collaborative units are the way to move forward. Every time I take one of Richard's units I improve as a teacher. Amy Wallis, St Andrews College, Marayong, ‘Create collaborative online units’, Oct 2016
This has definitely been a professional development that will SIGNIFICANTLY impact on my pedagogy. This is a course which inspires you to go out, take risks, experiment and get your hands dirty with the newly found skills. Allen Grant, Kinross Wolaroi School, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, March 2016
I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would highly recommend to fellow teachers! The course was interesting and flexible. I loved the encouragement and recognition that not everyone would be at the same level, and it was more about just trying to further develop your own skills. I also appreciated all the extra information provided along the way to assist in expanding my knowledge of a flipped classroom and all the programs and platforms out there. I was pleasantly surprised by how much enjoyment, satisfaction and motivation I had when developing my unit, in all its stages. Alana Morgan, Kotara High School, ‘Flipped-Maths’ course, Oct 2016
