A disengaged student cannot learn ... An engaged student cannot help but learn!
About the two conceptual-approach, student-engagement mathematics courses
Authentic student engagement is critical to learning. In our view, it is the first 'key' to be mastered when teaching any class - a bit like the corner square on a certain game board, 'Do not pass GO until you have mastered this one!'
Every Learn Implement Share course is inspired by the drive to help teachers better-engage their students in authentic ways.
There are two main courses specifically designed to provide maths teachers with effective strategies to engage students in the mathematics classroom. The course 'Engagement - winning over your mathematics class' addresses the specific and somewhat unique pedagogical requirements of the maths classroom.
The other course 'Formative assessment and feedback - A conceptual approach to Coordinate Geometry with GeoGebra' is an exemplary demonstration of the 'Understanding-first, Procedures-second' approach - explored in the 'Mathematics-Engagement' course - infused into one entire unit. Of course, the principles of the 'Understanding-first, Procedures-second' approach can be implemented into many maths topics. The courses can be considered comprehensive, guided learning journeys. They enable participants to reflect on their current practice, assess the value of the strategies and resources offered and share their views with course colleagues. Every strategy, idea and resource is designed to authentically engaged learners. Each participant implements a range of strategies with their students and reports back to course colleagues on their implementation experiences.
The TEAM Model
The ultimate way to undertake Learn Implement Share courses! Learn Implement Share courses are brilliant for individual teachers. However, undertaking a Learn Implement Share course as a TEAM affords optimum results for department-wide change.
I must say this is the best course I have ever done. I am definitely inspired by this course to the point where I talk to my colleagues about it and tell them what I have learnt. The course has been a positive change for me as I know what I need to work on. It will take time to fully change every single lesson but I am willing to commit to this. I do want my students to love coming to class and enjoy learning.
